Biography
Franco holds a diploma in Physics from the University of Trento (Italy) with a thesis on data analysis for gravitational wave antennas and PhD in physics at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) He specialises in his thesis on multivariate analysis of spectrometric data. Early in his scientific career he was involved in projects related to ion and electronics optics, mass spectrometry and spectroscopy: Photo-fragmentation and photo-ionisation studies on molecular beams, Surface-induced fragmentation of molecules and clusters in tandem mass spectrometry and spectroscopic measurements of volatile organic compounds emitted from plants. Since 2000 he has been a researcher at the Agricultural Institute of S. Michele all'Adige-Italia (now Edmund Mach Foundation) where he created a structure based on PTR-MS for agro-industrial applications.
In October 2019 he became head of the sensory quality research group at the Department of Food Quality and Nutrition of the Edmund Mach Foundation.
Research activities
Currently studying the application of direct injection mass spectrometry for the detection of volatile compounds in food science and technology and agronomy: Rapid product characterisation, on-line process monitoring, The correlation of the profile of food flavourings with sensory and genomic analysis and nose space measurements. His work also includes statistical analysis and data mining methods applied to spectral and sensory data. He has co-authored over 100 articles in ISI magazines.
