The heart of the FEM Sensory Laboratory is the Laboratory for Individual Evaluations, built in accordance with the UNI EN ISO 8589:2010 guidelines.
The laboratory is equipped with 22 individual booths, each fitted with a sink, screen, keyboard, and mouse, or an iPad. Each judge can therefore work in complete autonomy, following the instructions displayed on the screen by the staff. Inside each booth, a button allows the judge to attract the staff’s attention by turning on a red light located in the Sample Preparation Laboratory.
The environmental conditions are strictly controlled to prevent any possible alteration of the evaluations: panelists work in silence, and each booth is equipped with an air extraction and ventilation system to avoid odor buildup. The lighting conditions can also be individually adjusted for each booth: the light can be warm white, cool white, or red.
The transmission of instructions and the collection of data are managed by specialized software (EyeQuestion), which allows the staff to monitor the panel’s activity in real time and promptly process the responses.
The Sensory Lab is on the ground floor of the Palazzo della Ricerca e della Conoscenza (PRC) of the Research and Innovation Centre (CRI) at the Edmund Mach Foundation.
